Physiotherapy

Rehabilitation

BEFORE SURGERY

Acute Pain
We utilize physical therapy for acute episodes of lumbar or cervical pain. Physical therapy will teach you techniques for lumbar or cervical strengthening, which increases the muscle tone in your back to help prevent further injury.

Chronic Condition
Physical therapy is important for chronic conditions because it can help improve and maintain function and keep your muscles strong. However, we understand that when one has had chronic pain we need to approach rehabilitation in a different way.  If you are a chronic sufferer, we may place you in our “gentle” program. Here, we start with simple range of motion and core strengthening exercises once a week, teaching you techniques that will help you manage your pain during those flare-up periods.

When you have managed the gentle stage, we can progress to additional core strengthening exercises. Our goal is to strengthen your body so you are able to perform your daily activities and maintain independence as you manage your chronic pain.

Physical Therapy Session

AFTER SURGERY

After Surgery, we employ a graduated, three phase approach for your rehabilitation.

Phase I - Aquatic Therapy: Approximately 10 days after your lumbar surgery, we place you in aquatic therapy.  The buoyancy of water decreases the load on your joints allowing you to begin your rehabilitation in a gentle manner. In this low-impact environment, you will begin to work on your range of motion and begin the process of rebuilding muscle mass. This phase lasts four to six weeks.

Phase II – Land Therapy: As you move into ‘land therapy,’ you will build on the progress you have made during your aquatic phase. The therapists will employ different strategies to strengthen your core, back, and lower and upper extremities. You will learn exercises that you can use at home to continue to build the muscle mass that will provide support and stability. A strong body will allow you to perform the activities of daily living with reduced pain. This phase generally lasts 4-6 weeks.

Phase III – Individual Plan: Upon completion of phase II, we encourage all patients to develop an individual exercise routine that will progress your strength, maintain muscle mass, and allow you to be independent. You will be given a 7-day pass to the Wellness Center, a reduced membership fee, and help developing your individualized plan from a staff member. Continuing to exercise will improve your fitness and protect your back from further injury.
